Evaluation of Radio-Protective Effects of N-Acetylcysteine on Radiation-Induced Lethality in Mice
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction It has long been known that ionizing radiation can lead to detrimental effects in normal cells. In this light, Radioprotective chemicals have been used to decrease morbidity or mortality caused by ionizing irradiation. This study aimed to evaluate the radio-protective effect of N-acetylcysteineagainst radiation-induced mortality in male mice. Materials and Methods 52 healthy male mice were divided into four groups including NAC before irradiation (1), irradiation (2), NAC after irradiation (3) NAC before irradiation (4) and control. Three groups were treated orally with 100 mg/ kg of NAC. Gamma irradiation was performed at 8 Gy using a Co-60 machine. Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test were performed, using SPSS version 16. The significance level was considered to be 0.05. Results The statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between the test and control groups (P

full textProtective effects of methanolic extract of Vicia cracca against hypoxia-induced lethality in mice
Vicia genus has 45 species in Iran. Many protective and biological activities have been reported from these species. In spite of many works, nothing is known about protective effect of V. cracca against hypoxia conditions. In this study, protective effects of V. cracca extract against hypoxia-induced lethality in mice were evaluated by three experimental models of hypoxia, asphyctic, haem...
full textAcute and Chronic Effects of N-acetylcysteine on Pentylenetetrazole-induced Seizure and Neuromuscular Coordination in Mice
Background: N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been indicated against experimental seizures, but with relatively inconclusive results. This study was undertaken to evaluate whether NAC exerts a dose-dependent anticonvulsant effect and to determine NAC safe therapeutic dose range and its muscle-relaxant activity in both acute and chronic uses. Methods: Following intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of N...
full textRadio-protective effects of Hesperidin against gamma radio-radio-protective effects of Hesperidin against gamma radiation induced histopathological changes in the liver of Sprague Dawely rats
Introduction: Despite the extensive use of ionizing radiation in diagnosis and therapeutic procedures, development of radio-protector agents is important in modulating normal tissue damages. Hesperidin(HES) is a Flavanone glycoside, belonging to the Flavonoid family in human diet abundantly and noted for its many beneficial effects. The aim of present study was investigated to ...
full textProtective effect of N-acetylcysteine on Dipentyl phthalate (DPeP) induced cognitive dysfunction and brain oxidative stress in mice
Background: Dipentyl phthalate (DPeP) is a plasticizer compound commonly used in polyvinylchloride plastic to increase their softness and flexibility. They are not bound covalently to the plastic polymers and can therefore leach out into the environment, and have been shown to adversely affect the health of humans and animals. Methods: We investigated the effect of DPeP on the various cognitive...
